Bernardo Senna, Rio de Janeiro (1975)

Studied product design at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) until 1997. He worked along National Institute of Technology (INT) crew since 1995, designing products, equipments and vehicles. After graduation, he took part on the first on-line design magazine in Brazil, Novo Conceito. Between 2004 and 2006, acted as Manager of CentroDesignRio, where took part on several promotion actions and has had the opportunity to coordinate the book Momentum: Contemporary Design in Rio de Janeiro. In 2005, he is invited to show his designs at Maison et Objet fair, in Paris. Takes part on a brazilian design exhibition at Design Mai event in Berlin in 2006. On the next year, is selected to the book Design Brasil volume 2 that presents today’s’ most influential brazilian designers. Between 2010 and 2012, takes part at a brazilian household furniture culture survey, conducted by CNI (National Industries Confederation) and designs furniture collections for companies at the Ubá /MG furniture cluster by Sebrae’s request. Nowadays, he develops products and furniture for companies and his own production.

 

His design philosophy has focus on surprising: new products should bring unseen ideas and proposals that touches people’s curiosity. This way, they can open their minds for new possibilities on many other fields. His projects show an intensive attempt to reach innovative ways of exploring well known technologies.

 

Among his clients are Allê design, Schuster, Madesol, Tok & Stok, Orb, Oppa, Istituto Politecnico di Milano and Maze (Sweden).

 

His prizes and exhibitions were: a honorable mention for the Tera car in the Mitsubishi International Design Competition 2000; first place with the Céu sofa in the Celina´s Design Contest 2002; Tok & Stok´s Design Geniuses collection in 2002, with Torta bookshelf; Arte de Reciclar 2002 exhibition; Design Brasil 2003 event; Plasticidades 2003 exhibition; and Salão Design Movelsul 2004 exhibition, with Ritmo table and the first place at Mais com Menos Madeira prize, from SEBRAE/RO and Instituto Europeo di Design.

 

Acted as juror at the following design competitions: Salão Design Casa Brasil Fair 2009, Tok & Stok for students 2009, Salão Design Movelsul Fair 2010, Masisa Company 2010 and Movelpar Fair 2011.

 

His designs has been published by leading magazines and newspapers from all around the world like, from Brazil, Projeto Design, Arc Design, Casa Claudia, Casa Vogue, Viver Bem, Auto Esporte, Duas Rodas, Motor Show, Jornal do Brasil and O Globo; and, from other countries, the magazines Form and Plugged (Germany); Interiors (Canada); Design Net (Korea); I.D. (USA); AD (França); Ottagono, Next Exit e Auto & Design (Italy); Axis (Japan); Attitude (Portugal) and Madame Figaro (Taiwan).

Formado em Desenho Industrial na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro em 1997, escolheu a profissão, por desejar criar produtos que se destacassem pela surpresa, ao questionar as expectativas que temos dos objetos comuns, como forma de enriquecer e estimular as pessoas a também refletir sobre o seu próprio cotidiano.

 

Iniciou sua carreira no Instituto Nacional de tecnologia onde pode adquirir uma visão integral do design, exercitando a metodologia de projeto e técnicas produtivas diversas, do baixo ao alto conteúdo tecnológico. Expondo seus projetos próprios de mobiliário em revistas e eventos no Brasil, Europa, Estados Unidos e Japão, começou a atender marcas nacionais e estrangeiras, criando móveis e objetos de decoração em materiais diversos, que atendem desde o mercado popular até o de luxo, sempre com atenção ao equilíbrio entre a função e a personalidade invulgar de cada objeto.
